When any system is used as a server on a network and public is given access to it, it becomes vulnerable to attacks. Here are some tips to help a system administrator for improving server security:-

Keep all devices up to date. This will help you to protect against the latest threats. Use secure protocols; Monitor all servers for suspicious activity. Use TCP wrappers for access control. Most recent security patches must be applied. Keep logs of access to server. Servers should be physically located in access control environment. Use security token, finger printing or retinal scan technique for entry into restricted zones. Take monthly full backups and retain them for at least 1-2 years. Perform audits. Create general security awareness among employees. Disable the applications/ services which are not in use.
